Shannon Sewards

Photo of Shannon SewardsShannon Sewards is the Director of IRB Administration for the Committee on the Use of Human Subjects at Harvard University.  In this role, she is responsible for leadership of the human subjects research protection program and oversight of human subject studies at Harvard University Area Schools.

Shannon comes to Harvard from the University of Washington in Seattle, WA where she was Associate Director of IRB Operations.  Previous to this, she worked in several IRBs in the Los Angeles, CA region.  Shannon’s educational background is in Psychology having attained an undergraduate degree with honors from UCLA and a graduate degree with honors from Pepperdine University.

Shannon has taken a particular interest in streamlining existing IRB processes as well as in developing new methods to compete in the every changing regulatory arena such as with the movement to find flexibility in the human subject protection regulations, with the NIH genomic data sharing policy, and in simplifying the regulatory approach to large data and biospecimen repositories.
