Description:
The G. Harold and Leila Y. Mathers Foundation supports basic research with translational potential in areas such as immunology, microbiome, structural biology, cellular biology, cancer biology, genetics, genomics, microbiology and infectious diseases, stem cell biology, and neuroscience. The Foundation seeks to fund work that can lead to major advances in scientific understanding and human health.
The Foundation accepts LOIs twice a year on a one LOI per year, per PI basis. Internally, applicants are asked to apply to the cycle, Spring or Fall, that coincides with the time period in which they wish to begin their research. Internal applications will not carry over from cycle to cycle.
Harvard University, as a single institution, is limited to submitting three (3) LOIs to each Mathers Foundation application period. The Office of the Vice Provost for Research is facilitating an internal application process for those interested..

Research in any of the following areas are not supported by the Mathers Foundation:
- Covid-19 related research projects (aims or sub-aims)
- Plant Biology (including plant microbiome)
- Oceanography
- Space Exploration
- Global Warming
- Agriculture and Herbicide Research
- Clinical Trials or Drug Discovery
- Vaccine Development
- Ecology
- Environment
- Medical imaging technology related projects and/or electrical engineering technology development projects
Requests for funding previously federally supported research and/or applications pending federal approval will not be accorded priority consideration.
In general, the Mathers Foundation reviewers look for innovative, novel proposals, which have scientific merit with an established published proof of concept, and which may not be fundable at the federal level.
Grants are not intended for the purchase of capital equipment for a lab
Indirect costs may not exceed 10%
Awards are three, (3), years in length
